How much does refractive lens exchange cost in Korea?

RLE in Seoul costs about ₩1.5 million to ₩3 million per eye with a monofocal lens and ₩3.5 million to ₩6.5 million per eye with a multifocal or toric lens, approximately $1,100 to $4,800. Laser-assisted RLE with a premium lens can reach about ₩7.5 million per eye.

RLE is the same operation as cataract surgery, done to correct a refractive error rather than a cloudy lens. Because the technique and lenses are the same, Seoul clinics price it in line with cataract surgery in Korea.

Lens / technique Price per eye (KRW) Approx. price (USD) Main benefit
Monofocal IOL ₩1,500,000–₩3,000,000 $1,100–$2,200 Sharp vision at one distance
Multifocal or toric IOL ₩3,500,000–₩6,500,000 $2,500–$4,800 Distance and near, or astigmatism
Laser-assisted (FLACS) with premium IOL ₩5,000,000–₩7,500,000 $3,600–$5,500 Laser-made incisions and capsule opening
US example, per lens — About $6,895 Kraff Eye Institute, Chicago

USD figures are approximate at roughly ₩1,350–₩1,400 per dollar. Domestic Korean price guides list lower figures because Korean patients with cataract get part of the surgery fee covered by national health insurance; RLE for refractive purposes and foreign visitors are generally self-pay.

Who is RLE for?

RLE is mostly for people over about 45 with presbyopia, high hyperopia or high myopia who are not good laser candidates. Replacing the natural lens also means you will never develop a cataract in that eye.

Younger people with high myopia are often better served by ICL, which keeps the natural lens and its focusing ability. If you are 40–55, compare RLE with the options on our presbyopia surgery cost page.

What's included in an RLE quote?

Seoul RLE packages usually cover diagnosis, the lens and early aftercare.

  • Biometry and lens power calculation, topography, retinal (OCT) scan and endothelial count
  • The chosen intraocular lens
  • Surgeon, anaesthesia and operating room fees
  • Post-op drops and protective shield
  • Follow-up visits the next day and over the following weeks

Ask whether a laser touch-up for leftover prescription, or a YAG laser for later posterior capsule clouding, is included or charged separately.

What changes the price of RLE?

The lens you choose is the largest cost factor.

Factor Lower price Higher price
Lens Monofocal Trifocal, EDOF or toric multifocal
Technique Conventional Femtosecond laser-assisted
Astigmatism None or low Toric lens needed
Clinic Smaller eye clinic Large Gangnam center or university hospital
Extras Basic package Interpreter, coordinator, extended follow-up

How does RLE in Korea compare with the US?

Korea is usually substantially cheaper. Kraff Eye Institute in Chicago says RLE for one lens implant can cost about $6,895 including surgeon, anaesthesia and clinic fees, and that anaesthesia, the operating room and follow-up can add $1,000–$2,000 elsewhere. A premium RLE in Seoul at ₩3.5M–₩6.5M per eye is roughly $2,500–$4,800.

What are the risks of RLE?

RLE is intraocular surgery with risks that laser surgery does not carry. These include retinal detachment (a higher concern in highly myopic eyes), infection, swelling of the retina or cornea, posterior capsule clouding and, with multifocal lenses, halos and glare. Because RLE removes your natural lens, it cannot be undone in the same way an ICL can. Have a full dilated exam and discuss the risks with an ophthalmologist. Read the RLE treatment guide and our multifocal lens cost guide for more.

How long should I plan to stay?

Allow about 4–7 days for one eye and a week or more for both. Most surgeons do the second eye on a different day and check each eye the day after surgery. Use our trip budget guide to cost hotel nights and transport.

How should I budget for RLE beyond the surgery fee?

Plan for the whole treatment, not just the per-eye price. RLE involves two separate operations if both eyes are treated, and some costs come later.

Cost item What to expect
Pre-op exam Often included in lens surgery packages; ask
Surgery, per eye ₩1.5M–₩3M monofocal, ₩3.5M–₩6.5M premium
Hotel nights About a week for both eyes, sometimes more
Drops Usually included; extra bottles may be needed at home
Touch-up laser Ask whether included if residual prescription remains
YAG capsulotomy May be needed months or years later, usually at home

Ask how long the clinic waits between first and second eye. Some surgeons do the second eye a day later, others wait longer; this decides how many nights you need.

Get written lens details for both eyes (model and power) and a short English report. Any future eye doctor will need these, especially if you later have a touch-up, a YAG laser or retinal problems. Use the trip budget guide to cost the travel side.

Is RLE good value compared with other options?

RLE is the most expensive way to correct vision for many people, but for the right patient it solves several problems at once: distance blur, near blur from presbyopia and future cataract. For a younger person with a healthy, flexible natural lens, that trade is harder to justify, because the natural lens still focuses and the risks of intraocular surgery are higher than with laser surgery. Ask each surgeon to explain why RLE is better for you than laser surgery, ICL or glasses, and weigh the answer more heavily than any price difference. Compare laser options on our LASIK cost page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much is refractive lens exchange in Korea?

About ₩1.5M–₩3M per eye with a monofocal lens and ₩3.5M–₩6.5M per eye with a multifocal or toric lens, approximately $1,100–$4,800.

Is RLE the same price as cataract surgery in Korea?

The operation and lenses are the same, so clinic prices are similar. Korean patients with cataract get insurance help; RLE for vision correction and foreign visitors are generally self-pay.

Is RLE cheaper in Korea than in the US?

Usually. One Chicago practice quotes about $6,895 per lens, while premium RLE in Seoul is about $2,500–$4,800 per eye.

What is the best age for RLE?

RLE is usually considered from the mid-40s onward, when presbyopia begins. Younger patients often keep their natural lens with ICL instead.

Can I fly home soon after RLE?

Many patients fly after their surgeon clears them at the post-op checks, often within several days. Follow your surgeon's advice on timing.
