Is LASIK cheaper in Korea or Thailand?

Prices for standard LASIK are broadly similar, with Seoul often at or slightly below Bangkok for both eyes, and Seoul usually cheaper for SMILE Pro.

Which country has better technology?

Both have modern lasers; the bigger difference is clinic focus.

Seoul has many high-volume clinics that do only vision correction, and SMILE and SMILE Pro on the ZEISS VisuMax 800 are widely offered in Gangnam. Bangkok's leading providers are mostly large private hospitals with eye centres, which suits patients who want a hospital setting. How popular is Korea for medical travel?

Very. KHIDI reported about 1.17 million foreign patients in 2024, a record.

Japan sent the most (see LASIK in Korea vs Japan), and US patients made the most ophthalmology clinic visits. High volume means clinics are used to international patients, but it does not replace checking a surgeon's credentials. See English-speaking vision clinics in Korea.

How do I check a clinic and surgeon in either country?

Use the same checklist in Seoul and Bangkok: you are choosing a surgeon and a screening process, not a country.

  • Name the surgeon. Ask who will operate and confirm they are a specialist ophthalmologist who performs your procedure regularly.
  • Name the device. Ask which laser will be used, for example the ZEISS VisuMax 500 or VISUMAX 800, and make sure the quote says so.
  • See the screening. A proper exam includes corneal tomography, thickness measurement, tear testing and a dilated retinal check; be wary of a quote given before any exam.
  • Get it in writing. Ask for your measurements, the recommended procedure and the itemised price in English.
  • Ask about problems. Find out who you contact, and what happens, if you have a complication after you fly home.

A clinic that is willing to tell you that you are not a candidate is a good sign. Use our questions to ask your LASIK surgeon.

Which procedures can I get in each country?

The main laser procedures are available in both cities, so the choice rarely comes down to availability.

In Bangkok, published hospital packages list all-laser flapless LASIK, a no-flap small-incision technique and excimer PRK, and booking platforms list LASIK, ReLEx SMILE, PRK and SMILE Pro packages. In Seoul, clinics in this directory offer LASIK, LASEK, PRK, SMILE, SMILE Pro and ICL. Whichever city you choose, the procedure should follow your exam results, not the package you booked in advance.

What should I check in an overseas quote?

Compare what each price includes, not just the headline figure.

Package terms differ widely. One Bangkok hospital's published LASIK package, for example, included the operating room, medication and five follow-up visits over six months, but excluded specialist consultation fees, lab tests and treatment of complications, and applied only to fly-in patients during a promotion period. Seoul quotes vary too. Before you pay a deposit anywhere, confirm:

  • Whether the price is for both eyes or per eye
  • Whether the pre-op exam, medication and follow-ups are included
  • Whether an enhancement is covered if you are under-corrected, and for how long
  • Which laser model will be used
  • What happens to your deposit if the exam shows you are not a candidate

What about travel, visas and aftercare?

Plan the trip around recovery, not sightseeing.

Allow about three to five days in Seoul for LASIK or SMILE and longer for PRK or ICL. Korea may require a K-ETA or visa depending on nationality; Thailand offers visa exemption to many nationalities and a medical treatment visa. Ask any clinic how follow-up works after you fly home and whether records come in English. Read K-ETA and medical visa for Korea, flying after LASIK and the 3-day LASIK trip itinerary. Budget the whole trip with our total trip cost guide.

Who should choose which?

Pick the surgeon and aftercare plan you trust most, then the city.

  • Seoul may suit you if you want SMILE or SMILE Pro at a competitive price, a high-volume refractive clinic, or a trip combined with Korea's other attractions.
  • Bangkok may suit you if you prefer a large hospital, already know a Thai provider, or Thailand is closer and visa-free for you.
  • Either way, get a full pre-op exam and an ophthalmologist's advice. Results are never guaranteed.
