ICL vs LASIK: Which Is Right for You?

LASIK reshapes the cornea with a laser and suits low-to-moderate prescriptions with healthy, thick enough corneas. ICL places a removable lens inside the eye and is often chosen for high myopia (up to about -20 D) or thin corneas. In Seoul, LASIK costs ₩1.5M–₩2.5M for both eyes; ICL costs ₩4M–₩6.5M for both eyes.

ICL vs LASIK: Which Is Right for You?

What is the main difference between ICL and LASIK?

LASIK changes the shape of your cornea by removing tissue with a laser; ICL corrects vision by placing a thin, flexible lens inside the eye without removing any corneal tissue.

An ICL (implantable collamer lens) such as the STAAR EVO Visian ICL is folded, inserted through a tiny incision and positioned behind the iris, in front of your natural lens. See our LASIK surgery in Korea guide and ICL surgery in Korea guide for each procedure in depth.

Your exam results decide which column applies to you.

Factor LASIK ICL (EVO Visian)
Method Laser reshapes the cornea under a flap Lens implanted behind the iris
Tissue removed Yes No
Prescription range Low to moderate myopia; limited by corneal thickness FDA indication -3.0 to -20.0 D; toric for 1.0–4.0 D astigmatism
Thin corneas Often not suitable Usually not a barrier
Key anatomy check Corneal thickness and topography Anterior chamber depth at least 3.0 mm, endothelial cell count
Reversible No Yes, lens can be removed or exchanged
Main specific risks Dry eye, flap issues, ectasia Raised eye pressure, cataract, endothelial cell loss, infection
Price in Seoul ₩1.5M–₩2.5M both eyes (≈$1,100–$1,900) ₩4M–₩6.5M both eyes (≈$2,900–$4,700)

Which prescriptions are better suited to ICL?

ICL is most often recommended for high myopia, roughly -6 D and above, or when the cornea is too thin for a safe laser treatment.

Stronger laser corrections remove more tissue and can leave too little cornea, raising the risk of ectasia (a weakening and bulging of the cornea). ICL adds power instead. In the US, EVO and EVO+ ICLs are indicated for -3.0 to -20.0 D, with a stable prescription (within 0.5 D for a year). See corneal thickness for LASIK for where laser limits come from.

Is ICL riskier than LASIK?

ICL is intraocular surgery, so its rare complications differ and can be more serious, though both have good safety records in suitable patients.

The FDA lists phakic lens risks including raised eye pressure, cataract, loss of corneal endothelial cells, retinal detachment, infection, and the need to reposition or remove the lens. LASIK's main risks are dry eye, glare and halos, flap complications, under- or over-correction and, rarely, ectasia. Neither guarantees 20/20 vision. See LASIK side effects.

How does recovery compare?

Both offer quick visual recovery, with many patients seeing clearly within a day.

Most LASIK patients return to desk work in one to two days. After ICL you use drops and have eye-pressure checks in the first days, so plan follow-ups in Seoul before flying. See the ICL recovery timeline and LASIK recovery day by day.

Why is ICL so much more expensive?

Each eye needs a custom-ordered lens, and the surgery is an intraocular procedure in a sterile theatre.

In Seoul, ICL runs ₩4M–₩6.5M for both eyes (approximately $2,900–$4,700), versus ₩1.5M–₩2.5M for both eyes for LASIK. Compare ICL cost in Korea and LASIK cost in Korea.

How does the trip to Seoul differ for ICL and LASIK?

LASIK fits a short trip; ICL needs a little more planning because the lens is chosen from your measurements and the eye needs pressure checks after surgery.

For LASIK, many patients have the exam, surgery and a next-day check within a few days. For ICL, the clinic measures your anterior chamber depth, corneal endothelium and eye dimensions to select the lens size and power. Ask whether your lens is usually in stock or must be ordered, because that can decide whether surgery happens on this trip. After ICL, the eye pressure is monitored and you use drops, so do not book a flight home until your surgeon has cleared you. Our 3-day LASIK trip itinerary and flying after LASIK guides help with timing.

Who should choose which?

Your corneal measurements and prescription usually make the choice clear; preference matters when both are safe.

  • LASIK may suit you if you have low-to-moderate myopia, thick regular corneas, no significant dry eye, and want the lower-cost, fast-recovery option.
  • ICL may suit you if you have high myopia, thin or borderline corneas, or dry eye a laser could worsen, or you value reversibility, and your anterior chamber is deep enough.
  • Wait or reconsider if your prescription is still changing or you are developing cataract, where cataract surgery may be better.

What should I ask the clinic about ICL vs LASIK?

Ask questions that show why one option was recommended over the other for your eyes.

  • What are my corneal thickness, residual stromal bed and percent tissue altered if I had LASIK?
  • What is my anterior chamber depth and endothelial cell count, and am I within ICL limits?
  • Which ICL model is offered (for example EVO or EVO+), and is a toric lens needed for my astigmatism?
  • What follow-up schedule do you require after ICL, and who checks my eye pressure once I am home?
  • Does the ICL price cover both eyes, the lens, medication and follow-ups?

A full pre-op exam and an ophthalmologist's advice are essential. Find surgeons in the Gangnam EVO ICL clinic listings and bring our questions to ask your LASIK surgeon.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is ICL better than LASIK for high myopia?

Often, yes. For prescriptions around -6 D and above, ICL avoids removing large amounts of corneal tissue, and many surgeons prefer it. Your corneal thickness and chamber depth decide.

Can an ICL be removed?

Yes. An ICL can be removed or exchanged if needed, for example if its size or power needs changing or when cataract surgery is done later. LASIK changes cannot be reversed.

Does ICL cause cataracts?

Cataract is a known risk listed by the FDA for phakic lenses, though newer central-port designs such as the EVO ICL aim to improve fluid flow. Regular follow-up exams are important.

How long does an ICL last?

ICLs are designed to stay in the eye long term, but long-term data on every risk are limited, so ongoing check-ups are needed. Many people have the lens removed when they eventually have cataract surgery.

Is ICL or LASIK cheaper in Korea?

LASIK is far cheaper: ₩1.5M–₩2.5M for both eyes versus ₩4M–₩6.5M for both eyes for ICL in Seoul. Prices were checked in 2026.
