Private Clinic vs University Hospital: Which Is Better? (2026)

For routine LASIK, SMILE or ICL, a private refractive clinic is usually the practical choice: they specialise, schedule fast and quote about ₩1.5M–₩2.5M for LASIK, both eyes. University hospitals suit complex eyes such as keratoconus or retinal disease, but waits are longer and prices often higher.

Private Clinic vs University Hospital: Which Is Better? (2026)

Should I choose a private clinic or a university hospital?

For straightforward vision correction, a reputable private refractive clinic is usually the practical choice. For complicated eyes, or when you want the backing of a full hospital, a university hospital is the safer setting.

Korea has two broad models of eye care. Private refractive clinics concentrate on elective procedures such as LASIK, SMILE and ICL, often at high volume with English-speaking coordinators. University and other large teaching hospitals run full ophthalmology departments that treat everything from corneal disease to retinal surgery, and they also perform refractive surgery. There are also large private specialist eye hospitals, such as Kim's Eye Hospital and Nune Eye Hospital, which sit somewhere in between, treating a wider range of eye conditions than most refractive clinics. The right choice depends mainly on how complex your eyes are and how much time you have in Seoul.

Private clinic vs university hospital side by side

Factor Private refractive clinic University hospital
Main focus LASIK, SMILE, LASEK/PRK, ICL All eye conditions, plus refractive surgery
Scheduling Exam and surgery often within 1–2 days Usually slower; specialist appointments can take longer
English support International coordinators common at larger clinics International healthcare centres at major hospitals
LASIK price, both eyes Seoul range ₩1.5M–₩2.5M; e.g. B&VIIT ₩1.9M–₩2.1M Often similar or higher; e.g. CNU Hwasun from about ₩2.0M, femto-LASIK from about ₩2.7M
Exam fee Often ₩50,000–₩100,000, sometimes waived Often ₩150,000 or more
Complex cases Will usually refer on Keratoconus, retinal disease, glaucoma, previous surgery
Back-up if something goes wrong Depends on clinic; ask about referral partners Other subspecialists and emergency care on site
Who operates Clinic surgeon you meet in advance Professor; trainees may assist in teaching hospitals

Prices were checked in 2026 at about ₩1,350–1,400 per dollar; examples come from an October 2026 WhatClinic listing. CNU Hwasun Hospital is in South Jeolla, not Seoul, and is shown only as a published university-hospital example. Ask each hospital for a written quote.

When is a university hospital the better choice?

When your eyes need more than routine refractive surgery, a hospital department's range of subspecialists is worth the extra time.

Consider a university hospital if you have keratoconus or suspected corneal thinning, previous eye surgery or complications, glaucoma, diabetic or other retinal disease, very high myopia with retinal changes, or a cataract combined with other conditions. Hospitals such as Asan Medical Center, Samsung Medical Center and Severance Hospital run full eye departments. They may also be a sensible second-opinion option if a clinic has told you that you are borderline.

When is a private refractive clinic the better choice?

For healthy eyes and a standard prescription, a specialist clinic offers speed, focus and choice.

Large Seoul refractive clinics perform many of the same procedures every day, often have several laser platforms (for example ZEISS VisuMax for SMILE and SMILE Pro) and can usually fit exam, surgery and early checks into a short trip. That matters if you have only a few days. The trade-off is that quality varies more between private clinics, so vet them carefully: look for a full diagnostic work-up, a named surgeon, written prices and a clear enhancement policy. See questions to ask a LASIK surgeon and top LASIK clinics in Seoul.

What does the process look like at each?

At a private clinic the path is usually exam, surgery and checks within a few days; at a university hospital expect separate appointments.

A typical private clinic visit starts with a diagnostic exam of about 1.5–2 hours, including dilation, a consultation with the surgeon and, if you qualify, surgery the same or next day. The day-1 check follows, then a final check before you fly. Coordinators often handle booking, translation and payment. At a university hospital, you usually first register through the international centre, see an ophthalmology professor, and may be scheduled for tests and surgery on different days, depending on the department's list. That suits a longer stay or residents of Korea better than a short trip. In both settings, bring your glasses prescription and any earlier corneal scans, and stop contact lenses beforehand as instructed. See the pre-op eye exam guide.

How do I check either kind of provider?

Use the same checks for both.

  • Confirm the institution is registered to treat foreign patients; KHIDI handles registration and lists requirements for medical visas and agencies
  • Ask who your surgeon is and whether you will meet them before surgery
  • Get the exam results and a written quote that states both eyes or per eye
  • Ask what happens if you need care after flying home

KHIDI data show Korea treated a record 1.17 million foreign patients in 2024, with US patients making the most ophthalmology visits, so both models are used to visitors. See registered medical tourism clinics.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is LASIK safer at a university hospital in Korea?

Not automatically. For healthy eyes, an experienced private refractive surgeon can be just as safe. University hospitals add value for complex eyes and full hospital back-up.

Is LASIK more expensive at a university hospital?

Often similar or higher. One published October 2026 example lists LASIK from about ₩2.0M at a university hospital, compared with a Seoul clinic range of ₩1.5M–₩2.5M for both eyes.

Can foreigners get eye surgery at Korean university hospitals?

Yes. Major hospitals have international healthcare centres for foreign patients. Expect longer scheduling than at private clinics.

Which should I choose for keratoconus?

Usually a university hospital or a specialist cornea service, which can assess options such as cross-linking. Routine LASIK is not suitable for keratoconus.

Do university hospitals in Korea speak English?

Large Seoul hospitals have international centres with English support, but individual departments may rely on interpreters. Ask in advance.
