SMILE Cost: Korea vs USA (2026 Price Comparison)

Is SMILE cheaper in Korea than in the USA?

Yes, usually by more than half. Seoul clinics charge about ₩2.2 million to ₩3.2 million for both eyes, approximately $1,600 to $2,400. US sources put SMILE at about $2,000 to $4,000 per eye, which is $4,000 to $8,000 for both eyes.

Source / location Quoted price Both eyes (approx.)
Seoul, standard SMILE ₩2.2M–₩3.2M both eyes $1,600–$2,400
Seoul, SMILE Pro ₩3M–₩5M both eyes (typically around ₩4M) $2,200–$3,700
US typical range (Vision Center, 2025) $2,000–$4,000 per eye $4,000–$8,000
Waite Vision, Utah $2,950 per eye $5,900
UCLA Laser Refractive Center $3,500 per eye $7,000

Korean USD figures are approximate at roughly ₩1,350–₩1,400 per dollar. US figures come from the published sources listed at the end of this page. Korean quotes are usually for both eyes and US quotes usually per eye, so convert before you compare.

Is it the same SMILE procedure in both countries?

Yes. SMILE is performed with ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond lasers in both countries. The newer SMILE pro software runs on the VisuMax 800; ZEISS announced US FDA approval of the VisuMax 800 with SMILE pro software in January 2024, for nearsightedness with or without astigmatism. ZEISS says the VisuMax 800 creates the lenticule in less than 10 seconds and that more than 8 million eyes have been treated with SMILE worldwide.

Many Seoul clinics offer both standard SMILE and SMILE Pro, and price them differently. Ask which laser your quote is for, then compare like with like. Our SMILE Pro cost guide and SMILE vs SMILE Pro explain the difference.

Why is SMILE cheaper in Seoul?

Mainly volume and competition. Seoul, especially Gangnam, has many high-volume refractive clinics that compete on price and run frequent promotions. Korean price guides note that event prices can be well below list. Clinic overheads are also lower than in many US cities. Compare providers in our list of top SMILE clinics in Seoul.

What's included in each country's price?

Item Typical Seoul package Typical US package
Pre-op exam Often free or ₩50,000–₩150,000 Free screening; some take a credited deposit (UCLA: $500)
Surgery, drops, eyewear Included Included
Follow-up Early visits in Seoul Often 1 year (UCLA)
Enhancement Varies by clinic UCLA includes one if needed

Seoul packages vary more than US ones, so get the inclusions in writing. In particular, ask how a SMILE touch-up would be handled: SMILE leaves no flap to lift, so re-treatment is often done with a surface laser or another technique, which can take longer to heal and may mean a return visit. Our enhancement cost guide lists the warranty questions to ask.

Does the saving survive flights and hotels?

For most US travelers, yes. Korean Air listed round-trip economy fares from about $956 from Los Angeles and $1,096 from New York in late 2026. SMILE recovery is usually quick, so a 4–5 night stay is common. With flights, hotel and local costs, a Seoul SMILE trip often totals about $3,500–$4,500, compared with $4,000–$8,000 for surgery alone in the US. See the total trip budget for a worked example.

What should I weigh besides price?

Aftercare and candidacy matter more than the saving. SMILE suits many nearsighted people, but thin or irregular corneas, unstable prescriptions or some eye diseases can rule it out, and SMILE enhancements are often done differently from LASIK touch-ups. Risks include dry eye, glare or halos, under-correction and, rarely, infection. Have a full exam, follow your ophthalmologist's advice, and arrange a check-up at home after you return. Read SMILE recovery timeline and flying after eye surgery before booking flights.

Will US insurance pay for SMILE in Korea?

Rarely. Laser vision correction is usually treated as elective in the US, and coverage abroad is even less likely. HSA or FSA funds may apply to eligible medical costs; check with your plan administrator and keep itemized English receipts.

How do I compare a Seoul SMILE quote with a US quote fairly?

Use the same basis and add what each quote leaves out:

  1. Both eyes: double per-eye US quotes.
  2. Same laser: standard SMILE vs SMILE Pro (VisuMax 800) can differ by about ₩0.8M–₩1.8M for both eyes in Seoul.
  3. Inclusions: exam, drops, follow-up length and enhancement terms.
  4. Travel: flights, 4–5 hotel nights, transport, meals and time off work.
  5. Exchange rate and card fees: Korean prices are in won.
  6. Home check-up: a local eye doctor visit after you return.

If the Seoul total is still clearly lower and you are comfortable with aftercare at a distance, Korea is often good value. If your US quote is at the low end, or you have a complex prescription, staying near your surgeon may be worth the extra cost. Compare with laser alternatives on our LASIK cost: Korea vs USA page, and read SMILE vs LASIK in Korea if you are undecided.

Is SMILE Pro worth it if I am flying in from the US?

Possibly, but not for price reasons alone. SMILE Pro in Seoul still costs far less than standard SMILE in most US practices, so the upgrade is relatively cheap in dollar terms. Clinical results between SMILE and SMILE Pro are broadly similar; the main differences are laser time and workflow. Choose based on your surgeon's recommendation and the clinic's experience with the platform.
