Makeup after LASIK: when to wear eye makeup and skincare again

The FDA says to wait up to 2 weeks after LASIK before using eye makeup, lotions or creams, or until your doctor advises otherwise. Start with fresh products, especially new mascara, and keep anything away from the lash line until cleared. PRK/LASEK patients often wait longer while the surface heals.

When can I wear makeup after LASIK?

The FDA advises waiting up to two weeks after LASIK before using lotions, creams or eye makeup, or until your doctor tells you otherwise. Face makeup kept well away from the eyes may be allowed sooner; ask at your first follow-up.

The concern is infection and irritation. Makeup particles, brushes and fingers all carry bacteria, and flakes of mascara or eyeliner can lodge at the flap edge or on a healing surface. Removing makeup also means rubbing the eyelids, and rubbing is the main way a fresh LASIK flap is disturbed. The FDA warns that rubbing can dislodge the flap and require further treatment.

If you have an important event coming up, such as a wedding, photo shoot or business presentation, schedule surgery at least two weeks before it, so you can wear eye makeup without cutting your recovery short.

What is a product-by-product timeline?

This is a practical guide after uncomplicated LASIK, based on FDA advice. Your clinic's instructions come first.

Product Typical wait after LASIK Tips
Lip products, blush From day 1 Nothing near the eyes
Foundation, powder, sunscreen Ask your surgeon; up to 2 weeks for the eye area Keep a clear margin around the eyes
Moisturiser, serums, eye cream Up to 2 weeks around the eyes Fragrance and actives can sting if they migrate
Mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow Up to 2 weeks Use new products and clean brushes
Waterproof mascara After 2 weeks or later Harder to remove without rubbing
Lash extensions, lash lifts, tinting Only once specifically cleared Glue fumes and chemicals near the eye
Semi-permanent eyeliner, eyelid procedures Discuss with your surgeon first Treat as an eye-area procedure

Can I use skincare and sunscreen around my eyes?

Keep them away from the eyelids for the first two weeks. The FDA's guidance groups lotions and creams with eye makeup, because anything applied near the lids can migrate into the eye with sweat, tears or sleep.

Active ingredients tend to sting most: retinoids, exfoliating acids, vitamin C serums and fragranced products. Pause them around the eyes until you are cleared, and use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser on the rest of the face. Sunscreen on the cheeks and forehead, plus a hat and sunglasses, protects your skin without putting product near the eye. When you restart eye cream, apply a small amount along the bone below the eye rather than on the lid margin.

Sheet masks are a popular Seoul souvenir. Keep them away from the eye area, folding back the eye section, until your surgeon clears you for creams around the eyes.

Should I replace my makeup after LASIK?

Replacing eye products is a sensible, low-cost precaution. The FDA's eye cosmetic advice is to discard mascara three months after purchase, never share eye products, wash your hands before applying them, and throw away any eye cosmetics you were using if you develop an eye infection.

If your current mascara or eyeliner is more than a few months old, start with new ones. Wash brushes and sponges, or use new ones, before the first application. Pencil eyeliners should be freshly sharpened.

How should I apply and remove makeup in the first month?

Gently, and without pressing on the eye. Small habits make a difference while the eye is still healing.

  • Apply eye makeup in a well-lit room, sitting down, with a steady hand; the FDA advises never applying or removing it in a moving vehicle.
  • Keep eyeliner outside the lash line rather than on the inner rim (the waterline).
  • Choose a gentle, fragrance-free remover and press a soaked pad on the lid for a few seconds before wiping outwards.
  • Do not scrub or pull the lids sideways.
  • Use your prescribed drops before makeup, not on top of it.

Is the timing different after SMILE, PRK/LASEK or ICL?

Yes. The FDA guidance is written for LASIK, but clinics adjust it by procedure.

Procedure Typical eye-makeup wait Notes
LASIK Up to 2 weeks (FDA) Protect the flap from rubbing
SMILE/ SMILE Pro Often shorter; ZEISS says makeup routines can return shortly after surgery No flap; follow your clinic's date
PRK/ LASEK Not until the bandage lens is out and the surface has healed; often 2 weeks or more Surface is raw during days 1–5
ICL Follow the date your surgeon gives you Incision into the eye; infection prevention matters

What about K-beauty treatments while I am in Seoul?

Postpone anything near the eyes. Seoul is famous for lash lifts, lash extensions, brow tattooing and facials, and many visitors plan them around eye surgery. Do them before surgery or on a later trip. Facials that steam the face or press around the orbit also wait until you are cleared. Plan the rest of your stay with what to do in Seoul after LASIK.

What if my eye gets irritated after using makeup?

Stop all eye products, rinse with sterile artificial tears and do not rub. Contact your clinic if redness, pain, discharge or blur develop, and throw away the products you were using, as the FDA advises after any eye infection. Ongoing grittiness is more often dryness; see dry eye after LASIK. Other risks are covered in LASIK side effects. This is general information; ask your own surgeon before restarting products.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long after LASIK can I wear mascara?

The FDA says up to two weeks, or until your doctor advises otherwise. Use a new tube and remove it gently without rubbing.

Can I wear foundation after LASIK?

Face makeup kept well away from the eyes is often allowed sooner, but the FDA's two-week guidance covers creams and lotions too. Ask at your first follow-up.

When can I get eyelash extensions after LASIK?

Only once your surgeon specifically clears you. The glue and the time spent with eyes closed under a lamp are hard on a healing eye.

Do I need to throw away my old makeup?

It is a sensible precaution for eye products. The FDA advises discarding mascara three months after purchase in any case.

Can I wear makeup after SMILE sooner than after LASIK?

Often yes, because there is no flap, but timings vary between clinics. Follow the date your surgeon gives you.
