Monovision LASIK in Korea: Cost, Candidacy & Recovery
What is monovision LASIK?
Monovision LASIK is ordinary LASIK planned differently for each eye. The dominant eye is corrected for clear distance vision, and the other eye is deliberately left mildly short-sighted so that it focuses at reading distance. The brain learns to use whichever eye is sharper for the task.
It is a way to manage presbyopia, the age-related loss of near focus that usually begins in the mid-40s. Monovision does not stop the natural lens from ageing; it shares the work between the two eyes. Some clinics call a milder version 'blended vision' or 'micro-monovision', where the near eye is set only slightly short-sighted to preserve more depth perception.
How well does monovision work?
Most carefully selected people are satisfied, but not everyone adapts.
| Study | Patients | Key results |
|---|---|---|
| Peng et al, Clinical Ophthalmology 2018 | Emmetropic or mildly hyperopic presbyopes aged 45+ | Satisfaction rose from 64.7% before to 85.4% at 1 month; 88.9% of near eyes read 20/40 or better; 89.8% saw 20/20 or better at distance |
| Mannis, reported in Ophthalmology Times 2006 | 87 patients aged 40+ | 98% satisfied; 2 reversals, both in people who skipped a contact-lens trial; 31 eyes needed enhancement |
In the 2018 study, near eyes were targeted between −1.0 and −2.25 D (mean −1.48 D), and the strongest predictor of dissatisfaction was severe glare, halos or starbursts. The study authors note that monovision can reduce stereo vision and low-contrast sight. These are short follow-up studies, so treat them as encouraging rather than definitive.
How much does monovision LASIK cost in Seoul?
Monovision is priced as LASIK, because the procedure is the same. Our 2026 checks of Seoul clinics put monovision LASIK at about ₩1 million to ₩2.5 million for both eyes, approximately $730–$1,900 at ₩1,350–₩1,400 per dollar. Presbyopia-specific laser profiles such as PresbyLASIK run higher, about ₩1.5M–₩4M for both eyes. Presbyopia correction is non-covered (비급여) in Korea. For comparison, a London clinic listed blended vision at £2,500 per eye in October 2026. See our presbyopia surgery cost guide and the standard LASIK cost guide for package contents.
How does monovision compare with other presbyopia options?
Monovision is the least invasive way to reduce reading glasses for people whose natural lens is still clear. If you already have early cataract, a lens-based option may make more sense because it treats both problems at once; see multifocal IOL and EDOF lenses. If your cornea is unsuitable for a flap, monovision can be delivered with surface treatment or SMILE Pro instead. Our LASIK after 40 guide explains the trade-offs by age.
What happens at a monovision consultation in Seoul?
Expect the full LASIK work-up plus a few tests specific to monovision. The clinic checks which eye is dominant, usually with a simple sighting test, because the dominant eye is normally the one corrected for distance. Your reading habits are discussed, since a phone held at 40 cm needs less near power than fine print at 33 cm. Many surgeons then put trial lenses or contact lenses in so you can walk around, read a menu and look across the street before committing.
Be honest about night driving, sport and work. If you drive long distances in the dark, you may prefer a milder near target or a pair of distance glasses kept in the car. If the trial feels disorienting after a fair attempt, standard full-distance LASIK plus reading glasses is a perfectly good outcome. Ask how the clinic handles a request to rebalance the eyes later, whether that is included in the price, and how long you must wait. For a checklist to take with you, see questions to ask your LASIK surgeon.
Who is a good candidate?
Monovision suits people who are motivated to reduce reading glasses and can tolerate a small difference between the eyes.
- Age about 45 or older with symptoms of presbyopia
- Healthy corneas suitable for LASIK and a clear natural lens
- A successful contact-lens monovision trial of at least several days
- No need for precise depth perception at work, such as pilots or some professional drivers
Bring your current glasses and contact lens prescriptions to Seoul and, ideally, try monovision contact lenses at home beforehand. A clinic should test eye dominance and may let you try trial lenses during your visit. Our LASIK for pilots and military guide covers occupational limits. If you have a large difference between your eyes already, or a lazy eye, tell the surgeon, because that changes which eye should be set for near.
What is recovery like?
Physical healing is the same as standard LASIK, but the brain needs time to adapt.
| Time | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Usual LASIK healing; vision clear enough for daily tasks |
| Weeks 1–3 | Adaptation; some people notice one eye is blurrier, especially at night |
| 1–3 months | Most people stop noticing the difference |
| Any time | Distance glasses for night driving help if needed |
Most travellers stay 3–5 days. See LASIK recovery day by day.
What are the risks?
In addition to normal LASIK risks such as dry eye, halos and under- or over-correction, monovision can reduce depth perception and contrast in dim light, and a minority of people never adapt and request a reversal or enhancement, which may mean further surgery. Near vision also keeps changing with age. This is general information; get a full exam and an ophthalmologist's advice.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is monovision LASIK a good idea?
For motivated people over about 45 who pass a contact-lens trial, satisfaction is high in published studies. People who need sharp depth perception or night vision for work may be better with other options.
How long does it take to adjust to monovision?
Most people adapt within a few weeks; a minimum of about three weeks is often quoted. A minority never fully adapt.
Can monovision LASIK be reversed?
The near eye can often be re-treated for distance if corneal thickness allows. Ask the clinic about enhancement terms before surgery.
How much is monovision LASIK in Korea?
About ₩1M–₩2.5M for both eyes (approximately $730–$1,900) at Seoul clinics in 2026.
Will I still need reading glasses?
Possibly for very small print or long reading sessions, and more so as presbyopia progresses with age.
