ICL Cost: Korea vs USA (2026 EVO ICL Price Comparison)

Is ICL cheaper in Korea than in the USA?

Usually yes, often by several thousand dollars. Seoul clinics charge about ₩4 million to ₩6.5 million for both eyes, approximately $2,900 to $4,700. US practices commonly quote $3,000 to $6,000 per eye, and UCLA's published list is $6,663 per eye for a standard ICL.

Source / location Per eye Both eyes (approx.)
Seoul clinics (house range) About $1,450–$2,350 (half the both-eye price) ₩4M–₩6.5M ($2,900–$4,700)
US average (Discover Vision, Kansas City) $3,000–$5,000 $6,000–$10,000
Kraff Eye Institute, Chicago (2023 pricing) $4,000–$6,000 $8,000–$12,000
UCLA Laser Refractive Center, standard ICL $6,663 $13,326
UCLA Laser Refractive Center, toric ICL $7,013 $14,026

Korean USD figures are approximate at roughly ₩1,350–₩1,400 per dollar. Kraff also cites a nationwide average of $3,500–$5,000 per eye. Korean quotes are usually for both eyes, so always confirm whether a quote is per eye or for both eyes and compare on the same basis.

Is it the same lens in both countries?

Mostly, yes. The STAAR Surgical EVO/EVO+ Visian ICL is the main phakic lens in both countries. The US FDA approved the EVO/EVO+ ICL and toric ICL in March 2022 for nearsighted adults aged 21–45, and STAAR said in 2022 that EVO was available in more than 75 countries. In Korea the lens is supplied through a local distributor. Ask your clinic to name the exact model on your quote; see EVO ICL cost in Korea for model differences.

How does toric ICL compare?

Toric ICL costs more in both countries. UCLA charges about $350 more per eye for toric. In Korea, toric ICL adds about ₩1 million, for roughly ₩5M–₩7.5M for both eyes (≈$3,600–$5,500), versus $14,026 for both eyes at UCLA. Our toric ICL cost guide has the details.

What's included in each country's price?

Lens Included Included
Surgery and anaesthesia Included Included
Follow-up Early visits in Korea Often 1 year (UCLA)
Lens exchange if sizing is off Ask clinic Ask clinic

Does the saving cover travel?

For ICL, travel costs take a bigger share of the saving. ICL may need a longer stay than LASIK because the lens may be ordered after your exam and each eye is checked after surgery. Plan around 5–7 days. With a US round-trip fare from about $956 (Los Angeles) or $1,096 (New York) on Korean Air's late-2026 published fares, plus a week of hotel nights, Korea is usually cheaper than high-cost US centers but may be close to lower-cost US practices. Use the trip budget guide and the ICL recovery timeline to plan.

What should I weigh besides price?

ICL is intraocular surgery, so aftercare matters more than for laser surgery. Eye pressure, lens vault and endothelial cells need checking after you go home, and a lens exchange may be needed if sizing is off. Risks include raised eye pressure, glare, cataract and, rarely, infection. Choose a surgeon with high ICL volume, confirm who will monitor you at home, and get a full exam and an ophthalmologist's advice. Compare clinics on our Gangnam EVO ICL clinics page and read ICL vs LASIK.

Will insurance pay for ICL?

Generally not. ICL is elective vision correction in both countries, and US practices advertise financing rather than insurance coverage. Keep itemized English receipts if you plan to use HSA or FSA funds.

How do I compare a Seoul ICL quote with a US quote fairly?

Put both quotes on a per-eye or both-eye basis, then add what each leaves out. A practical checklist:

  1. Same lens: confirm EVO or EVO+, toric or non-toric, in both quotes.
  2. Same basis: convert per-eye and both-eye prices to one basis.
  3. Inclusions: compare exam deposits, follow-up length and lens exchange terms.
  4. Travel: add flights, about a week of hotel nights, transport and time off work to the Korean quote.
  5. Lens wait: budget extra nights in case the lens must be ordered.
  6. Home monitoring: add local eye doctor visits for pressure, vault and endothelial checks.

As a rough guide, the saving is largest against high-cost US centers and smaller against US practices at the low end of the $3,000–$5,000 per-eye range. If your US quote is near the bottom of that range, staying home may make more sense once you add travel and the value of local follow-up.

Whichever country you choose, prefer a surgeon who measures carefully, explains lens sizing and is willing to say no. For the travel side, see our where to stay near Gangnam eye clinics guide.

Who benefits most from ICL in Korea?

The saving tends to be most worthwhile for people facing high US quotes, people who need both eyes treated, and people already planning time in Korea. It is less compelling for anyone with a low local quote, very limited time, or a complex eye history that needs close follow-up. Whatever you decide, ask your home eye doctor before you travel whether they are willing to monitor an ICL done abroad, so you are not left without aftercare. Read ICL vs SMILE if you are still choosing between procedures.

One more practical point: get your exam data and the exact lens details in writing before you leave Korea. A US eye doctor will need them to check vault, eye pressure and the lens position, and they will matter if you ever need a lens exchange or cataract surgery later in life.
