EVO ICL vs Artisan Lens: Which Is Better? (2026)
Is EVO ICL or the Artisan lens better?
For most high myopes today, EVO ICL is the more commonly chosen lens, because it is foldable, goes in through a smaller incision and covers astigmatism up to 4 D. Artisan remains an established option for deeper eyes that suit an iris-fixed lens.
Both are phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs): they are added in front of your own natural lens, which stays in place, so the procedure is reversible. Both are used when the prescription is too strong or the cornea too thin for laser surgery. The choice depends on measurements only a full exam can provide: anterior chamber depth, endothelial cell count, the angle of the eye and the size of the space behind the iris. Read more about options for high myopia.
Where does each lens sit?
EVO ICL sits behind the iris, in front of the natural lens; Artisan is clipped onto the front surface of the iris.
The EVO ICL is a soft, foldable collamer lens made by STAAR Surgical. It is injected through a small incision and tucked behind the iris, resting in the ciliary sulcus. A tiny central port lets fluid flow through it, which is why a laser hole in the iris is usually not needed.
The Artisan lens, made by Ophtec and sold in the US as Verisyse, is a rigid PMMA lens with two small claws that grip a fold of mid-peripheral iris tissue. Because the classic model is rigid, it needs a larger incision, often closed with stitches. A foldable version, Artiflex, uses a smaller incision. Artisan sits in the anterior chamber, closer to the cornea's inner cell layer, the endothelium.
EVO ICL vs Artisan side by side
| Factor | EVO ICL | Artisan (Verisyse) |
|---|---|---|
| Maker | STAAR Surgical | Ophtec |
| Position | Behind the iris (posterior chamber) | Clipped to the front of the iris |
| Material | Foldable collamer | Rigid PMMA (Artiflex is foldable) |
| US-labelled myopia range | −3 to −20 D | −5 to −20 D |
| Astigmatism | Toric version, 1–4 D | ≤2.5 D on US label; toric models elsewhere |
| Minimum anterior chamber depth | 3.0 mm | 3.2 mm |
| Incision | Small, usually stitch-free | Larger, often sutured (classic) |
| Main long-term watch points | Vault, eye pressure, cataract | Endothelial cell loss, iris changes |
| Seoul price, both eyes (2026) | ₩4M–₩6.5M (≈$2,900–$4,700); toric ₩5M–₩7.5M | Quoted per clinic |
Dollar figures are approximate at ₩1,350–1,400 per dollar. We did not find enough published Seoul Artisan prices to give a reliable range; ask for a written quote that names the lens model.
What happens on surgery day?
Both are short operations under numbing drops, usually one eye at a time, but recovery differs with incision size.
For EVO ICL, the folded lens is injected through an incision of about 3 mm and unfolds behind the iris; vision often clears within a day, and the eye pressure is checked a few hours later and the next day. For the classic Artisan lens, the surgeon makes a wider incision to insert the rigid optic, clips the claws onto the iris and often closes the wound with fine stitches, which can induce some astigmatism until they are removed or adjusted. Artiflex reduces this. Either way, expect several follow-ups in the first week, avoid rubbing your eyes and arrange checks with an ophthalmologist at home.
Which lens is safer for the cornea?
Both can be safe in suitable eyes, but they need different safety checks: Artisan mainly for endothelial cells, EVO ICL mainly for vault and eye pressure.
The FDA labelling for Artisan sets minimum endothelial cell densities by age, from 3,550 cells/mm² at 21–25 to 2,000 over 45, and recommends regular monitoring. In the US study, cell density fell 4.76% over three years, which the label describes as consistent with normal ageing, although long-term effects are not established. For EVO ICL, STAAR reported 629 eyes followed for three years in the FDA trial, with no pupillary block or pigment dispersion and anterior subcapsular cataract in 0.16%. The vault (gap between ICL and natural lens) must be checked; a lens that is too large or small may need exchanging.
Do they give the same vision?
Studies comparing them directly report similar visual results.
A 2008 study in the Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society compared 32 ICL eyes with 40 Artisan eyes for 12 months. Uncorrected vision of 0.8 (about 20/25) or better was reached by 89% of ICL eyes and 94% of Artisan eyes, with the same mean final refraction of −0.78 D. The authors found no significant difference in results. In that study the ICL group lost more endothelial cells (5.34% versus 0.83%), while the Artisan group had more early corneal swelling and iris side effects. Older lens models were used, so results may differ with today's EVO design.
Who should choose which?
EVO ICL often suits you if you:
- Have myopia from about −3 D, or astigmatism up to 4 D
- Have an anterior chamber of at least 3.0 mm and a healthy angle
- Want a small, stitch-free incision and quick recovery
Artisan often suits you if you:
- Have high myopia from about −5 D and a deep anterior chamber (≥3.2 mm)
- Have a high endothelial cell count for your age
- Have a surgeon experienced with iris-fixation and anatomy suited to it

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is EVO ICL better than Artisan?
Neither is better for everyone. EVO ICL covers a wider range and astigmatism up to 4 D through a small incision; Artisan suits deep eyes with healthy endothelium. Your measurements decide.
Are ICL and Artisan lenses removable?
Yes. Both are phakic lenses added in front of your natural lens and can be removed or exchanged, though any eye surgery carries risk.
Does the Artisan lens damage the cornea?
It sits closer to the cornea, so the FDA label requires minimum endothelial cell counts and recommends regular monitoring. Many eyes do well, but lifelong checks matter.
How much does EVO ICL cost in Korea?
In Seoul, EVO ICL costs about ₩4M–₩6.5M for both eyes and toric EVO about ₩5M–₩7.5M, based on 2026 checks.
Do I need an iridotomy with EVO ICL?
Usually not. EVO ICL has a central port that lets fluid flow, which is why a laser hole in the iris is generally not needed. Your surgeon will confirm.
