LASIK for athletes and gamers: which procedure fits? (2026)
Is LASIK a good idea for athletes?
It depends on your sport. LASIK creates a thin corneal flap, so a hard blow to the eye can displace it, even long after surgery. The FDA advises that if you actively take part in contact sports such as boxing, wrestling or martial arts, LASIK may not be for you. Many contact-sport athletes choose a flapless procedure instead.
For non-contact sports such as running, cycling, golf or tennis, LASIK is widely used. Guidance on this page was checked on 1 November 2026.
Which procedure suits which sport?
| Activity | Often considered | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Boxing, MMA, wrestling, martial arts | SMILE, LASEK, PRK | No flap to dislodge |
| Rugby, football, basketball, hockey | SMILE, LASEK, PRK; LASIK with care | Risk of eye impact |
| Running, cycling, golf, tennis | LASIK, SMILE, LASEK, PRK | Low impact risk |
| Swimming, diving, water sports | Any, with a longer pause after surgery | Water and infection risk early on |
| Esports and long gaming sessions | Any suitable procedure | Dry eye management matters most |
SMILE removes a small lenticule through a small incision, with no flap. LASEK and PRK reshape the surface, so recovery is slower and more uncomfortable but there is no flap at all. Compare them in SMILE vs LASIK, LASEK vs SMILE and LASIK vs PRK.
How soon can I train after surgery?
The FDA gives these timings after LASIK. Surface procedures can take longer because the surface must heal first, so follow your surgeon's plan.
- Non-contact sports: from 1 to 3 days, depending on the activity and how you feel
- Strenuous contact sports such as boxing, football or karate: not for at least 4 weeks
- Swimming, hot tubs and whirlpools: avoid for 1–2 months
- Eye shield: wear it to sleep so you do not rub the eye; the FDA graphic suggests nights for 4 weeks
Wear protective sports eyewear when you return, especially in ball and racquet sports. See exercise after LASIK and swimming after LASIK.
What does each option mean for training time?
Recovery time is often the deciding factor for competitive athletes. As a rough guide:
| Procedure | Early recovery | Training impact |
|---|---|---|
| LASIK | Vision usually clear within a day or so | Light training in days; contact sport after 4+ weeks (FDA) |
| SMILE / SMILE Pro | Usually a few days | Similar early return; no flap to protect long term |
| LASEK / PRK | Several uncomfortable days while the surface heals | Longer pause; clearer vision builds over weeks |
| ICL | Usually quick visual recovery | Intraocular surgery; follow surgeon's activity limits |
Whichever you choose, the FDA says vision may take three to six months to fully stabilise, so avoid scheduling surgery right before a major competition. If your sport has vision standards or eye-protection rules, check them with your governing body first. Gamers and esports players should plan around tournaments in the same way, leaving at least a week of reduced screen time and practice.

Is LASIK good for gamers?
Yes, gamers can have LASIK, SMILE or other procedures if they are suitable candidates. The main issue is dryness. People blink less while concentrating on a screen, and dry eye is the most common side effect of refractive surgery. The AAO says dryness and changing vision during the day usually fade within a month for most people.
Practical steps for gamers and esports players:
- Plan a few days with little or no screen time straight after surgery
- Use preservative-free lubricating drops as advised
- Take regular breaks and consciously blink during long sessions
- Ask about dry-eye testing before surgery if you already have symptoms

Will halos or glare affect night games or competitive play?
They can at first. The FDA lists light sensitivity, glare, starbursts and halos as common early symptoms that should improve considerably within days, and says vision may take 3–6 months to stabilise. Large pupils raise the risk of glare and halos, so ask the surgeon about yours. See halos and glare after LASIK.
When should athletes schedule surgery?
Off-season. Allow at least a month before contact training, more for surface procedures, and avoid pools for 1–2 months. A trip to Seoul for LASIK or SMILE takes about 3–5 days. Prices checked in 2026, for both eyes: LASIK ₩1.5M–₩2.5M (approximately $1,100–$1,900), SMILE ₩2.2M–₩3.2M, LASEK ₩1.5M–₩2.5M and PRK ₩1.3M–₩2.2M. See SMILE surgery in Korea.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is SMILE better than LASIK for contact sports?
Many surgeons prefer SMILE, LASEK or PRK for contact sports because there is no flap to dislodge. The FDA advises that active contact-sport athletes may not be good LASIK candidates.
How long after LASIK can I play football?
The FDA says strenuous contact sports should not be attempted for at least four weeks after LASIK. Follow your surgeon's advice, and wear protective eyewear.
Can I go to the gym after LASIK?
Light non-contact exercise is usually allowed after one to three days, according to the FDA. Avoid sweat running into the eyes and do not rub them.
Is LASIK good for gamers?
Yes, if you are a suitable candidate. Expect some dryness at first, limit screens for a few days, and use lubricating drops.
Can a flap move years after LASIK?
It is uncommon, but a strong blow to the eye can displace a LASIK flap even years later. This is why contact-sport athletes often choose flapless procedures.
