Exercise after LASIK: when you can run, lift and play sport
When can I exercise after LASIK?
Light, non-contact exercise is usually fine after 1–3 days, depending on your activity and your doctor's advice, according to the FDA. Contact sports need at least 4 weeks, and swimming 1–2 months.
The reason is the corneal flap. It seals within hours but stays vulnerable to a direct blow or a hard rub for weeks. Sweat running into the eye is irritating and tempts you to wipe it; dust and pool water carry germs while the surface heals. Walking is fine from the day after surgery, as long as you protect your eyes from sun and dust.
Most people feel well enough to exercise sooner than they should. Feeling comfortable is not the same as being healed, so let the timeline below, not how your eyes feel, decide when you go back. If you train seriously or compete, tell the clinic at your consultation: it may change which procedure is recommended for you.
What is a safe exercise timeline after LASIK?
This table combines FDA guidance with common clinic practice. If your surgeon gives different dates, follow them.
| Activity | Typical earliest return after LASIK | Precautions |
|---|---|---|
| Walking, light stretching | Day 1 | Sunglasses outdoors |
| Running, cycling, gym cardio | After 1–3 days | Headband or sweatband; do not wipe eyes |
| Weights, yoga, pilates | After 1–3 days, lightly | Avoid straining; use a clean towel |
| Tennis, badminton, squash | Ask your surgeon; protective eyewear | Fast balls and shuttlecocks can hit the eye |
| Football, basketball, martial arts, boxing | At least 4 weeks | Sports goggles strongly advised |
| Swimming, hot tubs, saunas | 1–2 months | Tight goggles once cleared |
Outdoor cycling and running bring wind and dust, which dry the eye and can blow grit under the lids. Wraparound sunglasses help for the first few weeks.
Hot yoga and heated studio classes deserve the same caution as a sauna: heat dries the eye and sweat pours into it. Leave them until your surgeon clears you for saunas and hot tubs.
Why do contact sports need a month or more?
Because a hard blow can shift the flap. Flap displacement is rare, about 0.012% of eyes over 12 months in the AAO's 2023 Preferred Practice Pattern data quoted on EyeWiki, and is usually caused by trauma or rubbing. A displaced flap needs urgent repositioning by the surgeon.
The flap never regains the full strength of an untouched cornea, and late traumatic dislocations have been reported years after surgery. That is why surgeons recommend sports goggles for ball and combat sports long term. If you box, wrestle or play rugby, ask about flapless SMILE, PRK or LASEK; see SMILE vs LASIK.
The good news from EyeWiki's review: in a series of 66 eyes with late traumatic flap dislocation, all reached 20/40 or better after repair, and 70.3% reached 20/20. Prompt treatment matters, because the risk of cells growing under the flap rises the longer repair is delayed.
Ask your clinic for written clearance dates for each sport you play and keep them with your records. Coaches, team doctors and martial-arts instructors sometimes ask for confirmation that you have been cleared to return.
How does exercise timing differ for SMILE, PRK/LASEK and ICL?
SMILE has no flap, so impact risk is lower; PRK/LASEK must wait for the surface to heal; ICL involves an incision into the eye and is usually treated more cautiously.
| Activity | LASIK | PRK / LASEK | SMILE | ICL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light cardio | After 1–3 days | After the bandage lens is out, about a week | About 1 week | Walking in 1–2 days; gym after about a week |
| High-impact or contact sport | At least 4 weeks | As your surgeon advises, usually weeks | 1–2 weeks after evaluation | Usually delayed longer than gym work |
| Swimming | 1–2 months | As advised, after surface healing | 1–2 weeks after evaluation | Usually delayed longer |

Can I lift weights after LASIK?
Yes, lightly after 1–3 days for LASIK, if your surgeon agrees. Lifting does not harm the flap, but very heavy straining raises pressure in the head and sweat runs into the eyes. After ICL, avoid heavy straining and head-down bending for the first few days.
How do I keep sweat out of my eyes?
- Wear a headband or sweatband for the first month.
- Dab your forehead with a clean towel, never wipe across the eyes.
- Use lubricating drops after workouts if your eyes feel dry.
- Train indoors or wear wraparound glasses on dusty or windy days.
Can I exercise while recovering in Seoul?
Gentle walks are fine from day 1. Skip the jjimjilbang (Korean sauna and bathhouse) and hotel hot tubs: the FDA advises avoiding hot tubs and whirlpools for 1–2 months. Skip dusty hikes in the first week. Ideas for the recovery days are in what to do in Seoul after LASIK, and water rules in swimming after LASIK. For the full picture see LASIK recovery day by day.
What if I get hit in the eye after LASIK?
Contact your clinic the same day if a blow is followed by pain, blur, watering or light sensitivity. A shifted flap can usually be repositioned with good results when treated promptly. This is general information; ask your surgeon for advice on your own eyes.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How soon can I go to the gym after LASIK?
Usually after 1–3 days for light cardio and weights, according to FDA guidance, if your surgeon agrees. Keep sweat out of your eyes and avoid rubbing them.
Can I run the day after LASIK?
Walking is fine; most surgeons prefer you wait 1–3 days before running. Wear sunglasses and a sweatband.
When can I play football or do martial arts after LASIK?
The FDA says to wait at least 4 weeks for contact sports such as boxing, football or karate. Wear sports goggles long term.
Is SMILE better than LASIK for athletes?
SMILE has no flap, so a blow cannot displace one, which is why it is often suggested for contact sports. PRK and LASEK are flapless too but recover more slowly.
Can I do yoga after LASIK?
Gentle yoga is usually fine after a few days. Avoid long head-down poses and hot yoga until your surgeon clears you.
